JINS 3003 - The Bible as Literature

The Bible has inspired some of the most creative and destructive events and movements in human history, and its texts have been interpreted and misinterpreted in many disparate ways. But what might these stories have meant in their original context? How might we begin to hear the message their authors intended? This course helps you embark on the journey by exploring the many different types of literature in the Bible and how they are used to communicate in fundamentally different ways. Using the disciplines of religious studies, academic biblical scholarship, and historical and literary criticism, you are equipped with the skills of interpretation and reflection that empower you to read the biblical text in translation both empathetically and critically. No previous familiarity with the Bible is required!
