IDSM 250 - Italian American Experience in Film This is a film course that addresses various aspects of Italian American immigration, culture, and assimilation as expressed through film and supported by texts. This course explores the historical context of the big Italian immigrations to the United States; various aspects of Italian culture that helped and/or hindered the survival of the newcomers; and the progression of Italian Americans from a subaltern minority, victimized by racism, to an assimilated group whose culture and contributions are an important part of the American cultural tapestry. It also analyzes the image of Italians and Italian Americans in popular culture, focusing on film.
