JUST 332 - Children & the Legal System An examination of all parts of the legal system involving children: children who are abused and neglected, status offenders, and delinquent youth. The child protective process is explained including mandatory reporters, foster care, family reunification and termination of parental rights. Youth contact with law enforcement, the juvenile court, detention, placement in youth services institutions and transfer to adult court will be studied. Children involved in the system will be viewed in the context of family, school, peers, and other social and environmental factors. The impact of race, gender, and social class on youth referred to the system will be covered. The course will include theories and evidence informed programs for prevention and intervention.
