HIST 3150 - Plutocrats & Progressives: The Gilded Age and Progressive Era, 1865-1920


This course covers the history of the United States during the period between the close of Reconstruction and the end of World War I. It examines the major social, economic, cultural, political, and foreign policy developments in what have come to be known as the Gilded Age (c. 1865-1901) and the Progressive Era (c. 1901-20). The course focuses upon how elite and ordinary Americans alike perceived and responded to the country’s rapid transformation from a rural-agrarian society to an urban-industrial one, as well as its emergence as a major player on the world stage.
