STEM 515G - Philosophy of Science

This is a different kind of science course, in which we will think deeply about the nature of science, and critically examine the basic vocabulary commonly used by scientists. For example, consider the following questions: do we “verify” or “falsify” theories? What is a “theory”? What is an “explanation”? What is a “law of nature”? Is there a “scientific method”? Do things like atoms really exist? What makes a specific discipline “scientific”? Throughout the course, we will look at how various philosophers have attempted to answer these and other questions.
