Japanese Minor

The minor in Japanese offers opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of cultural, linguistics, and societal diversity by focusing on studies of Japan, including traditional and modern culture, language, literature, history and religion. With the approval of the Department of Classical and Modern Languages, courses taken in International Studies Exchange or Study Abroad Programs in Japan can be substituted for courses listed below.

Program Requirements:

This minor requires the successful completion of 15-17 credit hours as listed below. Two courses may double count toward a major or toward a second minor.

6 credit hours (complete both):

JAPN 301 - Advanced Japanese I Credits: 3
JAPN 340 - Topics in Japanese Credits: 3
*JAPN 340 Topics in Japanese with the following topic:
- Japanese Culture and Sociolinguistics

9-11 credit hours (select three of the following):

JAPN 302 - Advanced Japanese II Credits: 3
JAPN 401 - Fourth Year Japanese I Credits: 3
JAPN 340 - Topics in Japanese Credits: 3
*JAPN 340 Topics in Japanese with the following topics only:
- JAPN 340 Topics in Japanese: Japanese Language and Linguistics
- JAPN 340 Topics in Japanese: Japanese Film
- JAPN 340 Topics in Japanese: Translation in Japanese
HIST 434 - History of Japan I Credits: 4
HIST 435 - History of Japan II Credits: 4
PHRE 312 - Japanese Religions Credits: 3
