Gain an in-depth appreciation of Italian language, culture, and civilization. The rediscovery of Roman civilization was one of the most important aspects of the Renaissance, which began in Italy and spread to the rest of Europe. By studying classical Italian culture, you acquire an understanding of key historical periods in the formation of Italian civilization and get a better perspective on our modern culture as well.

A minor in Italian Studies pairs well with any major — whether you’re in business, communication, medicine, education, or many other professional fields. Or perhaps you’d just like to pursue a personal interest. The core courses zero in on Italian language and culture, while the supporting courses broaden your perspective, offering choices in various disciplines such as film, art and history.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

A 2.00 GPA in minor requirements.
At least nine hours of the program requirements must be completed at Truman State University or through a Truman State University faculty-led program.
No grade of ‘D’ is accepted toward the Italian Studies Minor.
The Italian Studies Minor requires the successful completion of 15 credits of coursework in Italian studies. These classes, if taken for another major, can still be counted toward the Italian Studies Minor.

Notes:

Some of the above requirements may be satisfied with study abroad courses or other international experiences. All students pursuing an Italian Studies minor wishing to count (a) study abroad course(s) towards the minor must successfully complete a Study Abroad Course Equivalency Application form, available on the Department of Classical and Modern Languages website, and receive approval of that application. Prior to completing that form, students must consult with the chair of the Italian Studies Committee. Failure to consult and to fill out and gain approval of the Course Equivalency request may result in some or all credits not being awarded for courses taken abroad.
A course of Italian language at the 300 level or above can substitute any course for the Italian Studies minor.
Students who pursue a minor in Italian Studies may earn the Digital Badge of Advanced Study in Romance Language. To achieve the badge, students must complete the specialization in both French and Spanish; or a specialization in French, plus at least one of the following minors: Italian Studies, Latin, Spanish, or Spanish for the Professions; and the Linguistics course LING 315 - Structure and History of Romance Languages with a grade of ‘C’ or better and a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in all coursework applied to the badge. None of the courses may be taken as Credit/No Credit. In order to be certified as having fulfilled the requirements of the badge, students must submit an application and current transcript (unofficial is fine) no later than the first semester of the senior year. The application is available on the CML department website.
