African and African Diaspora Studies Minor


Affiliation: Interdisciplinary Studies

When pursuing an African/African-American Studies minor, students study of the peoples of Africa and its huge Diaspora, particularly the African-American population. By combining faculty expertise across a wide variety of disciplines, students gain a deeper understanding of not only the origin of but also the dynamic cultural mix that constitutes the African Diaspora. From Egyptian art to modern jazz, we have the people of Africa to thank for much of our literature, music and sensibilities both in the U.S. and across the world today.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. A 2.00 GPA in minor requirements.
  2. At least nine hours of the program requirements must be completed at Truman State University.

Program Requirements:


The African and African Diaspora Studies minor requires the successful completion of at least one course from three different areas plus additional courses for a total of 15 or more credits.

  • At least one course should relate specifically to Africa.
  • At least one course should relate to the African Diaspora.
  • No more than two courses (up to 8 credits) may double-count towards this minor and any major.

Minor Requirements:


  • Select a minimum of five courses from at least three of the areas below.
  • Choose at least one course marked with a single asterisk (*) for African content.
  • Choose at least one course marked with double asterisk (**) for African Diaspora content.
  • Seek out other opportunities via the list of topic courses. Consider studying abroad.

Courses on the list below may count towards the minor with the approval of the Chair of the African and African Diaspora Studies Minor. Courses that have at least fifty percent content related to African or African diaspora studies will receive automatic approval. Courses that have at least twenty-five percent African or African-American related content will be approved if they are supplemented through the completion of a major paper or project pertaining to African or the Diaspora. These courses will count either for the African or African Diaspora component of the minor depending on their content.

Study Abroad
