Mandarin Chinese, the world’s most spoken language, is a powerful asset in global business, diplomacy, tech, and trade. A Chinese minor gives you high-demand language skills and cross-cultural expertise that set you apart in any career. You’ll build solid proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Mandarin while exploring China’s rich history, culture, society, and contemporary world through engaging courses.

Truman boosts your experience with study-abroad programs in China or Taiwan, plus Taiwan Connect—a service-learning course where you teach English online via Zoom to elementary and middle school students in Taiwan. This lets you gain teaching experience and build your resume—all from campus.

Pair it with any major (business, international studies, political science, STEM, and more) to strengthen your resume, gear up for grad school, and excel in fields like international business, foreign policy, education, law, communications, and beyond.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

A 2.00 GPA in minor requirements.
A minimum of nine credits of the coursework for the Chinese Minor must be completed at Truman State University or through a Truman State University faculty-led program.
No grade of ‘D’ is accepted toward the Chinese Minor.
A maximum of six credit hours may be double counted for another minor.

Program Requirements:

The Chinese Minor requires the successful completion of 16-17 credits of the following courses.

4 credit hours (complete both):

CHIN 202 - Intermediate Chinese II Credit(s): 3
CML 429 - Studies in Foreign Language Credit(s): 1 to 6

12-13 credit hours from the following:

CHIN 300 - Topics in Chinese Credit(s): 3 * May be taken more than once for credit under different topics.
CHIN 301 - Third Year Chinese I Credit(s): 3
CHIN 302 - Third Year Chinese II Credit(s): 3
CHIN 311 - Chinese Culture Credit(s): 3
CHIN 321 - Chinese Film: Culture and Society through Cinema Credit(s):
HIST 3641 - History of Modern China Credit(s): 4

Note:

Some of the above requirements can be satisfied by Study Abroad courses. It is required that all Chinese minors planning to study abroad seek the advice of a Chinese faculty member before leaving the country. A Study Abroad Course Equivalency Request Form, available on the CML website, must also be completed and approved to facilitate course transfer. Failure to do so may result in some credits not being awarded for experience abroad.
