DEPARTMENTAL HONORS IN GERMAN

Minimum criteria for Honors in German:

3.50 overall Truman GPA
3.80 GPA in German courses
Procedure for applying for Honors in German if the above minimum criteria are met:

a. Letter of application written in German
b. Portfolio of work in the German program
c. Oral interview

Each applicant should meet with his/her capstone professor or German convener for details. Deadline for application: before midterm of the graduating semester.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS:

Liberal Studies Program Requirements: 34-58 Credit Hours

Missouri Statute Requirement: 1-3 Credit Hours

Bachelor of Arts Requirements: 0-6 Credit Hours

Intermediate proficiency in ONE foreign language

GERM 230 - Intermediate German I Credits: 3 hours
GERM 231 - Intermediate German II Credits: 3 hours

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS

The German Major consists of two (2) parts: Required Support and Major Requirements. Each student must complete both parts.

Part I: Required Support: 3-9 Credit Hours

GERM 130 - Elementary German I Credits: 3 hours
May be used to fulfill LSP requirements.
GERM 131 - Elementary German II Credits: 3 hours
May be used to fulfill LSP requirements.
LING 238 - Introduction to Linguistics Credits: 3 hours

Part II: Major Requirements: 30 Credit Hours

GERM 300 - German Composition and Conversation Credits: 3 hours
GERM 332 - Introduction to German Literature I Credits: 3 hours
GERM 333 - Introduction to German Literature II Credits: 3 hours
GERM 429 - German Capstone Experience Credits: 3 hours

Students select from the following to bring total upper-division credits in German to 30:

GERM 335 - German in Contemporary Society: Applied Economic and Political Aspects Credits: 3 hours
GERM 336 - German Civilization I Credits: 3 hours
GERM 338 - German Civilization II Credits: 3 hours
GERM 339 - German Culture in English Credits: 3 hours
GERM 430 - Topics in German Credits: 3-6 hours
May be elected more than once for credit under different topics.
GERM 432 - German Linguistics Credits: 3 hours
GERM 435 - Translation: German-English/English-German Credits: 3 hours
GERM 437 - Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Masterpieces of German Literature Credits: 3 hours
GERM 439 - Twentieth Century Literature of the German Speaking Countries Credits: 3 hours

NOTE:

No grade of “D” in major courses will be accepted toward the German major.

Electives to Total: 124 Credit Hours
