Program Requirements:

The Linguistics Minor requires the successful completion of 15-16 credit hours from the following:

LING 319 - Linguistics of a Language or Language Family Credits: 3 hours
May be selected for credit more than once under different topics.
LING 323 - English Grammars Credits: 3 hours
LING 324 - Topics in Sociolinguistics Credits: 3 hours May be selected for credit more than once under different topics.
LING 401 - Undergraduate Readings in Linguistics Credits: 1-4 hours
LING 406 - Language and Learning Credits: 3 hours
LING 412 - Practicum: Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language Credits: 3 hours
LING 413 - Advanced Linguistics Credits: 3 hours May be selected for credit more than once under different topics.
LING 414 - Language and the Mind Credits: 3 hours
LING 417 - History of the English Language Credits: 3 hours
ENG 419 - Linguistics and Literary Criticism Credits: 3 hours
LING 451 - Internship for Linguistics Credits: 1-4 hours
LING 452 - Internship Evaluation Credits: 1-3 hours
LING 510 - Studies in the English Language Credits: 4 hours May be selected for credit more than once under different topics.
ENG 508 - Old English Credits: 4 hours

Notes

Linguistics courses that are language-specific (e.g., FREN 425 Phonology and Advanced Grammar, GERM 432 German Linguistics, SPAN 364 Spanish Phonetics and Phonology, SPAN 380 Spanish Applied Linguistics, SPAN 456 History of the Spanish Language) may count toward the 15 hours, but only ONE such course may be used toward satisfying foreign language major or minor and linguistics minor requirements. (Similarly, for English majors, only one course taken for English major credit may be used toward satisfying the 15 hours.) In addition to the language-specific linguistics courses above, with committee approval, up to 2 semesters of foreign language courses may be used toward satisfying the 15 hours if not taken to fulfill any other requirement.

No grade of “D” will be accepted toward the Linguistics Minor.
