    Diagnosis of Communication Disorders is a graduate level course requiring analysis and synthesis of previous coursework in the area of completing diagnostic evaluations for individuals with possible communication disorders. Experiences vary but may include working in small groups in reviewing available information, making appropriate evaluation plans, interviewing clients or caregivers, selecting and administering formal and informal tests, interpreting test results and synthesizing information, reporting findings in oral and written formats, and making appropriate recommendations and referrals.

  • CMDS 567 - Neural Bases of Speech, Language, and Swallowing


    This course is designed to provide speech-language pathology undergraduate and graduate students with an introduction to human neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of the speech, language, and swallowing mechanisms, across the lifespan. Emphasis is placed on developing an understanding of the neurophysiological underpinnings of human communication and its disorders. This course is designed to prepare students for further study in neurologically based communication disorders.

  • CMDS 661G - Language Disorders in Early Childhood


    The purpose of this course is to prepare participants to evaluate and treat children ages birth through preschool who present with language disorders. Study will focus on the etiology and characteristics of specific disorders, theoretical and practical considerations in assessment and intervention, and developing skills in language sample analysis and interpretation. Emphasis will be placed on a sociolinguistic view of language development and intervention, cultural factors in assessment and intervention, and language skills related to academic success.

  • CMDS 662G - Aphasia: Assessment and Treatment


    This course will focus on the study of aphasia - an acquired language disorder, as a result of a left hemisphere cerebrovascular accident or related disorders. The history of aphasiology, symptomatology and etiology, models of classification of aphasia, assessment and treatment efficacy, and evidence-based practice will all be discussed. The underlying medical disorders that can affect the prognosis of aphasia will be discussed to heighten the student’s awareness of the medical context with which an aphasia syndrome may be found.

    As a result of this course, students become familiar with the methods, rationale, and statistical knowledge necessary for planning and implementing simple research projects in communication disorders.     All graduate students participate in the Clinical Process Commentary (CPC) activities. The CPC is a requirement for the Master of Arts degree in Communication Disorders. The CPC experience includes 2 main components: Clinical Process Commentary 1 (CPC1) and Clinical Process Commentary 2 (CPC2). Both the CPC1 and CPC2 courses are available for variable (1 to 3) credits. Typically students enroll in 1 credit while completing CPC1 and 2 credits while completing CPC2. A total of 3 credits must be completed as a requirement of the Master of Arts degree in Communication Disorders. The course is graded pass/fail and students receive an In Progress (IP) grade until all requirements are met.

  • CMDS 681G - Advanced Clinical Practice


    This course provides a clinical practice in application of advanced techniques for speech, language and hearing disorders. The student obtains direct clinical experience with clients who exhibit a variety of communication disorders. Student responsibilities include: writing lesson plans; conferring with clinical supervisors, parents and related paraprofessionals; utilizing clinical materials, equipment and technology: and writing clinical reports. May be repeated for credit; generally all graduate students are expected to enroll in CMDS 681G every semester they are in residence.

    Prerequisites: CMDS graduate status and Department Chair’s permission. Student clinicians must demonstrate clinically appropriate speech/language/hearing skills prior to enrollment in clinical practicum.

  • CMDS 682G - Internship in Hospital/Clinic


    The internship provides intensive, clinical and administrative experience off-campus within a primarily medical setting with a variety of clinical disorders under the direct supervision of a master clinician. Generally, internship enrollment occurs in the final semester of graduate work after all other required courses have been completed, including CPC1.

    Prerequisite: Students must have a 3.00 GPA in the major and the approval of the Communication Disorders faculty prior to enrollment. Admitted to the CMDS graduate program.

  • CMDS 683G - Internship in Public School


    The internship provides intensive, clinical, and administrative experience off-campus in a school setting with a variety of clinical disorders at the pre-K to grade 12 level under the direct supervision of a master clinician. Generally, internship enrollment occurs in the final semester of graduate work after all other required courses have been completed, including CPC1.

    Prerequisite: Students must have a 3.00 GPA in the major and the approval of the Communication Disorders faculty prior to enrollment. Admitted to the CMDS graduate program.

  • CMDS 684G - Language Disorders in School-Aged Children


    The purpose of this course is to prepare participants to evaluate and treat school-aged children (Kindergarten through twelfth grade) with language disorders. Study will focus on the etiology and characteristics of specific disorders, theoretical and practical considerations in assessment and intervention, and developing skills in language sample analysis and interpretation. Emphasis will be placed on a sociolinguistic view of language development and intervention, cultural factors in assessment and intervention, and language skills related to academic success.

  • CMDS 685G - Acquired Cognitive-Linguistic Disorders


    This course encompasses the presenting symptoms, diagnoses/etiology, and clinical approaches for the management of the cognitive-linguistic disorders associated with Non-dominant Hemisphere Disorder (NDHD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and dementia. Emphasis is given to both traditional and innovative approaches of clinical management, including evidence-based practice (EBP).

  • CML 308 - Principles of Second Language Teaching


    This course is designed to introduce students to the principles of teaching a second language. Students will learn key insights from second language acquisition (SLA) research and study theoretical models of language acquisition based on this research. Linking theory to practice, students will explore implications for instruction that emanate from this research base and learn to design activities that are harmonious with the mental processes by which the mind acquires language.

    Students who receive credit for CML 308 may not receive credit for LING 308.

  • CML 470 - Modern Language Capstone Experience


    A culminating experience in which the student will demonstrate skills and knowledge garnered from his/her experience within the language specialization. The Modern Language major will develop an extensive project under the supervision of a Modern Language faculty member in his/her language of specialization. The capstone topic selected will directly relate to the language, literature, culture, history, and/or civilization of the student’s language specialization. The student will present the results of his/her project in a public forum. The student’s concept for the project must be approved by his/her capstone supervisor during the penultimate semester of the senior year so that an override for enrollment can be granted.

  • CML 471 - Modern Language Capstone Experience I


    This first part of a two-semester sequence is to be taken during the fall semester of the senior year. The sequence of courses is intended as a culminating experience in which the student demonstrates skills and knowledge garnered from his or her experience within the language of specialization. Under the supervision of a faculty mentor, the student will finalize conceptualization of the capstone project, develop a bibliography and establish a time-line for completion of the project the following semester. Enrollment is by override.

    This course is the continuation of Modern Language Capstone Experience I and is taken in the spring semester of the student’s senior year.   • COMM 345 - Film as Dialogue: The Social Power of Cinema


    This Student-Initiated Course asks students to think critically about film as a mode of communication that engages identity constructions and politics, cultural influences, and social effects. This course examines film as a messaging system that may reflect or promote sociocultural norms, but also may enable audiences to negotiate meanings and use film as a site of resistance and/or self-expression. In addition to having roots in the theoretical models and approaches of communication as a field of study, the course also incorporates interdisciplinary frames with links to a variety of fields of study, including gender studies, English, history, sociology, anthropology, psychology, and philosophy. In this course, students learn critical theories and how the application of them can unearth new meanings in films through screenings, readings, and analyses of particular films, especially those that reflect films that both counter and support political or social agendas, specifically those that define or contest normative identities.

  • COMM 430 - Social Media: Theory and Practice


    Attempts to define social media often seem both incomplete and out-of-date, as changes occur more rapidly than can be fully grasped. Just as social media are impacting almost every aspect of daily life in nearly every corner of the globe (real and virtual), they are also having an effect on human communication as we know it. In many respects, social media are merely an extension of long-standing communication processes-regardless of the particular medium or channel in use; in other respects, social media are inventing many new products and practices, the consequences of which remain elusive. This course will examine the ever-changing uses of social media and their effects on their audiences and on the process of human communication. Media, rhetorical, and communication theories such as systems theory, Habermas’ Public Sphere and McLuhan’s Media Ecology can provide the theoretical base for the class while methodologies such as audience studies and textual analysis can be employed for further investigation.

    This course provides an overview of the crucial roles that communication plays in modern organizations. A grounding of organizational theory occurs in the opening weeks.
