HIST 3130 - From Fragile Federation to Expanding Empire: Forging the US Republic, 1780-1820

The United States began as a weak, loosely knit confederation of thirteen states, with small-scale farming economics, facing continuing conflicts with the world’s strongest empire and western Native peoples. This class will explore how, four decades later, it became a strong and sophisticated nation, with a unique society and culture, even as its increasing wealth and power from expansion slavery, and industry threatened new conflicts.
