PHRE 316 - Religions of China and Japan


A survey tracing the historical developments of religion across China and Japan, with specific attention to Confucianism, Daoism, Mahayana Buddhism, Shinto, folk religious practices, and new religions movements (NRMs). Explores the roles of social institutions and socio-political shifts in the maintenance and evolution of these traditions and practices. Students are exposed to a diversity of academic and primary sources across the historical records of China and Japan.
