JAPN 323 - Japanese Culture and Sociolinguistics

This course considers 1) the essence of Japanese culture, covering aesthetics, literature, thought and religion and 2) societal values underlying Japanese peoples’ verbal and non-verbal behaviors. Students will be able 1) attain not only an appreciation of Japanese culture from an outsider’s (non-Japanese) perspective but also an understanding of it in the ways in which Japanese people perceive it and 2) gain an insight into sociolinguistic and cultural sources that shape the ways in which the Japanese interact and communicate with each other. The class consists of lectures, class discussions, group work and video/film viewing.

Prerequisite: JAPN 102 - Elementary Japanese II or permission of instructor.
