MUSI 210 - Perspectives in Music: Hip-Hop


Hip-Hop is a broad term attached to art, music, literature, and other artistic outlets. This course examines Hip-Hop music and culture. Students will explore the culture, lyrical, and musical elements embodied in Hip-Hop and rap music and demonstrate an understanding of these ideas through written exams, class discussion, and original compositions. Topics range from the Golden Era of Hip-Hop to international Hip-Hop to American East Coast/West Coast rap. Student will engage in critical analysis of the musical, lyric, and thematic content of the works studied, as well as consider the influences of and on Hip-Hop culture as a whole. This course is open to all students, regardless of major or prior formal music education. Students do not need to know how to read written musical notation in order to be successful in this course.
