MUSI 203 - Perspectives in Music: Musics of Latin America

This course is an introduction to a variety of representative music styles from Latin America, covering traditional idioms, as well as popular and classical repertoire. A basic understanding of these styles will be gained through the analysis of recordings and musical transcriptions, as well as through the performance of easy exercises, all of this while keeping technical musical language to a basic, manageable level for non-music majors. In addition, a study of the social and historical context that surrounds these musical structures will provide students with an opportunity to better understand both the music and Latin American culture in a broader sense.
