PHYS 332 - Galactic Astrophysics “Galactic Astrophysics” will cover the physics of the structure, evolution, and present-day appearances of galaxies in our Universe. Using our own Milky Way Galaxy as an example, students will discuss stellar populations, galactic dynamics, and dark matter. Students will develop analytical and numerical tools, based on Newtonian dynamics and thermodynamics, that will help them to understand the properties of local and high redshift galaxies. Advanced topics such as the structure of the Universe and the big bang theory will also be discussed.
Prerequisites: Grades of ‘C’ or better in (PHYS 131 - Introduction to Astronomy or PHYS 132) AND PHYS 250 - Modern Physics I AND PHYS 275 - Vibrations and Waves . Credit(s): 3
