LING 198 - New Majors Seminar This class will explore the difference between theoretical and applied linguistics (and how these came to be separate fields of study, giving a bit of history of the disciplines and the professional organizations that support them), how these relate to other academic fields of study (such as linguistic anthropology, communications, communication disorders, English, modern and classical languages, philology, semiotics, and philosophy of language), and how these map to different career options. (Guest Zoom visits from alumni in different careers are encouraged.) Students will become familiar with the program outcomes for their degree, will create a four-year plan, and will learn how to communicate the value of a degree in linguistics.
Credit(s): 1 NOTE: This course is optional for transfer students.
