STAT 429 - Statistical and Data Contests An experience analyzing big data sets in a team environment under tight time constraints. Students develop skills in statistical computing, communication, teamwork, and unstructured problem solving. Beyond the contest setting itself, this experience models how data science teams frequently function in industry, with short turnarounds focused on top-level insights. The course includes a culminating experience: completion of a real world statistical contest sponsored by an outside organization such as the ASA, Kaggle, etc. Some offerings may involve off-campus travel to a contest location, while others might involve an intense weekend of work on campus. This course is repeatable for up to 3 credit hours.
Prerequisites: Completion of STAT 220 or STAT 250 or CS 310 .
Recommended Experience: Additional coursework in Statistics, Data Science, or CS. Credit(s): 1
