PHRE 314 - Chinese Religions


This course is a survey of Chinese religious traditions, including early Chinese worldview, Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism. We will explore the development of each religion in a larger historical context. Coverage will focus on the main characteristics of each religion, the interaction among the various traditions, and their influences on Chinese people’s daily lives and ways of thinking. Through lecture, discussion, and audio-visual presentation, this course aims to provide a general understanding of what religion has meant for the Chinese and what role religion has played in the Chinese culture and society.

Credits: 3 hours
NOTE: General Honors Course.
NOTE: This course fulfills the Philosophical/Religious Mode of Inquiry and the Intercultural Interconnecting Perspective of the Liberal Studies Program.
NOTE: This course counts toward the 63-hour Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) graduation requirement.
