NASC 400 - The History of Science to 1700 Introduction to basic topics in the history of science from ancient Greece to Isaac Newton. Students will read a variety of primary and secondary sources covering three time periods: the origins of western science in Greece and the Middle East, the nature of science in medieval Islam and medieval Europe, and the Scientific Revolution in Europe (1500-1700). Emphasis is placed on the historical, philosophical, and religious influences on the emergence of western science. Previous knowledge of science or history is helpful, but not necessary.
Credits: 3 hours When Offered: (fall only) NOTE: Honors Scholar Course.
NOTE: This course fulfills the Historical Mode of Inquiry of the Liberal Studies Program.
NOTE: This course counts toward the 63-hour Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) graduation requirement.
