CHN 310 - China Study Abroad Program


A five-week summer study abroad program that provides language and culture instruction in Beijing and Shanghai, China. Students may participate without prior knowledge of Chinese.  Language courses are offered for all levels plus Chinese literature, history, Chinese economy, and Chinese calligraphy at Shanghai University for four weeks. Visual Art Internships are also available for up to 5 credits. The students receive six to seven Truman credits. During the first week of the trip, students tour the Chinese capital city, Beijing; the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, National Opera House, Tiananmen Square, Chairman Mao Museum, and the sites of the 2008 Olympics, plus the Terra-Cotta Warrior Museum and many other historical sites in the city of Xian.  Students also visit the Shanghai Museum, art galleries, cruise the Huang-Pu River in Shanghai and Garden City-Suzhou, West lake-Hangzhou and many other field trips while studying at Shanghai University. Students gain knowledge of the language and culture and also experience personal contact with Shanghai University students and Chinese people in their daily living.

NOTE: This course fulfills the Foreign Language and Intercultural Interconnecting Perspectives of the Liberal Studies Program.
NOTE: This course counts toward the 63-credit Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) graduation requirement.
