Affiliation: School of Arts & Letters

As a linguist, you find language structure fascinating for what it can tell us about the way the mind works. Applied linguistics looks at applying that knowledge to real-world problems. How can we teach foreign languages better? How can we use language to make better standardized tests? How can we improve the role of language in medical encounters, in business, in the courtroom?

  • Our applied linguistics minor is one of only two in the state.
  • You get hands-on practical experience locally, teaching English to speakers of other languages.
  • You can also pursue international for-credit ESL internships.

Having a strong foundation in applied linguistics expands your career opportunities in professional areas such as:

  • second language acquisition (e.g., teaching ESL or teaching foreign language)
  • literacy
  • language assessment
  • forensic linguistics
  • translation
  • language policy and planning

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. A 2.00 GPA in minor requirements.
  2. At least nine hours of the program requirements must be completed at Truman State University.
  3. No grade of ‘D’ is accepted toward the Applied Linguistics Minor.
  4. Students may double-count one course from this minor toward their major or toward a second minor.

Program Requirements:

The Applied Linguistics Minor requires the successful completion of the following:

Notes:

While the Applied Linguistics minor is designed for students pursuing a number of careers, it also meets most of the requirements necessary for those interested in getting the add-on ESOL Certification as part of the Master of Arts in Education (MAE) degree at Truman. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) certifies specific content areas for initial licensure which includes additional coursework; ESOL certification can only be added on to that initial certification in the content area with four additional graduate level courses (ED 619G , ED 624G , ED 629G , and LING 608G ). The Applied Linguistics courses required for the certification are marked with an asterisk (*) above.
