Affiliation: School of Health Sciences and Education

Purpose
Youth sport programs are an integral part of both public and private primary and secondary education. In addition, almost all communities have both government (e.g,. county recreation programs) and/or private (e.g., YMCA) youth sport programs. The National Association for Sports and Physical Education (NASPE) has published guidelines for the preparation of youth sport coaches. Designed in alignment with these NASPE standard, the coaching minor provides the framework to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate and safe coaching instruction to young athletes. Students planning to enter primary or secondary education (pre-MAE) may wish to consider preparing for a coaching role as part of their career development program. Other students may wish to prepare for a role coaching community youth sports programs (e.g,. YMCA, Little League, etc.).

The minor is open to all majors. The courses in the Coaching minor are restricted to Exercise Science and Athletic Training majors.
