Admission to the BFA Creative Writing program requires either 1) Grade of “B” or above in ENG 204 Creative Writing and submitting a letter of application to the Department Chair or 2) Submitting both a creative writing sample and letter of application to the Department Chair.

Students may not earn both a BFA Creative Writing and a BA English degree.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS:

Liberal Studies Program Requirements: 31-57 Credits

Missouri Statute Requirement: 1-3 Credits

Bachelor of Fine Arts Requirement: 0-6 Credits

Intermediate Proficiency in ONE foreign language

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS: 32-41 Credits

Any three 300-level or above courses from the three literature areas of the BA English major: 9-12 Credits

ENG 204 - Creative Writing Credits: 3
ENG 498 - Senior English Seminar Credits: 4

Choose at least two courses from the list below: 6-7 Credits

ENG 355 - Introduction to Literary Genres: Poetry Credits: 3
ENG 356 - Introduction to Literary Genres: The Novel Credits: 3
ENG 357 - Introduction to Literary Genres: The Short Story Credits: 3
ENG 358 - Introduction to Literary Genres: Nonfiction Credits: 3
ENG 516 - Studies in Literary Genres Credits: 4

Any three of the following courses: 9-10 Credits

ENG 407 - Writing Workshop: Fiction Credits: 3
ENG 408 - Writing Workshop: Poetry Credits: 3
ENG 409 - Writing Workshop: Nonfiction Credits: 3
ENG 501 - Advanced Nonfiction Projects Credits: 4
ENG 504 - Advanced Creative Writing Credits: 4

Elective Courses:

In consultation with their academic advisor, students select 1-5 credits from the following:

ENG 401 - Undergraduate Readings in English Credits: 1 to 4
ENG 418 - Special Topics Credits: 1 to 3
ENG 451 - Internship for English Credits: 1 to 4
AND ENG 452 - Internship Evaluation Credits: 1 to 3

Note:

Only grades of “C” or higher in major courses are accepted toward a Creative Writing degree.
