Asian Studies Minor

Program Requirements:
Students choosing this interdisciplinary minor have three options. Those whose primary interest is in East Asia must satisfy Option I. Those interested primarily in South or Pan-Asian topics must choose Option II. Those interested mainly in Asian American issues choose Option III. Students may double-count two courses toward their major or toward a second minor. With the approval of the committee, courses taken in International Studies Exchange or Study Abroad Programs in Asian regions can be substituted for courses below. OPTION I – EAST ASIAN
The East Asian Option requires the successful completion of 18 credits of courses listed below. Select from the following:
Area Requirements
Select the remaining 12 credits from the three areas listed below. Students must have at least one course from each of the three areas listed below. At least two courses should be at or above the 300-level.
OPTION II – SOUTH OR PAN-ASIAN
The South or Pan-Asian Option requires successful completion of at least 15 credits taken from the courses listed below. The Option has no language requirement but students are encouraged to study an appropriate language if it is available. Students must choose courses from at least three of the Option’s five areas. At least three of these courses must be at or above the 300 level. Those with South Asian interests are especially encouraged to take courses like GEOG 322, ENG 321 (India), and PHRE 310, PHRE 311, and PHRE 315. OPTION III – ASIAN/ASIAN-AMERICAN
Students choosing the Asian/Asian American Option must successfully complete at least 15 credits from the courses listed below, including one of the following courses: HIST 318, HIST 319, ENG 326 (Asian American). They must take at least three courses at or above the 300 level, and in at least three of the five areas of the minor. |
