HIST 3103 - US History and Historiography, Through Reconstruction

This course focuses on American history from the initial period of European settlement in North America through the Civil War. Students consider the major themes of early American History, as well as the conflicting interpretive lenses that historians have used to explain the past. Students learn how historical interpretation is shaped by theory, scientific method, moral and political choices, and the application of methodologies drawn from other disciplines. This course or its equivalent for post-1877 US history, HIST 3104 - Historiography of the Modern United States, is required of all history majors during their first year as a declared history major.
